My tumblr little sister, Syd’s post made me think about the way I treat my books.
I don’t lend out books. Never have. Because I physically ruin my books. A terrible habit- I know- but I really love it. I doodle, annotate, dog ear my pages. There are random tear drops and tea stains everywhere. I have a super old copy of Bridge to Terabithia(my first big kid book) that is a mess. My mother hates that I marked up my only bible with questions and rants. My bookshelf looks like someone attacked and vandalized my most prized possessions. People are appalled when they look at my bookshelf. My ex’s mother thought it was an art piece. I supposed it’s a statement of sorts.
I guess so, if that statement is I use things. These are my things. I love these things. Don’t touch my things.
I’d post a picture but it’s really fucking embarrasing.
Part of me does it so I don’t have to lend them out because books are so personal. The other part just loves going back and seeing on which page exactly was I emotionally ruined. Which part of that novel pissed me off so much that I wrote in red ink “REALLY?!” Which bit left me so in awe that I spilled my overlysweetened tea on the page.
To me every book is a workbook.
Anyone else have this habit?

- reluctantabandon said:I do it with — I guess you’d call them textbooks: books I use for school. I was trained young not to mark up books, and had to get over that in college. I love to use post-it flags, and my school books are filled with them! XO
